Exiting the game during a special stage doesn't save regular stage progress

When clearing a level with emerald tokens, and then leaving/quitting the game during a special stage, the player will have to beat that level again when continuing from that save file. Presumably the game only saves when entering the next level, but if possible it might be better to save when exiting the current level?
