[Bug] Opening profile settings causes character to reset to default

This behavior occurs when playing with a different character / color / pet than the current profile's default selections.

If at any point ingame the user enters the Profile Setup menu under Options—then opens any profile's settings—the current character, color, and pet selections are reset to the profile default.

This does not take effect immediately, but rather as soon as the user exits the current race, and can be seen by joining a new race.

Behavior occurs regardless of which profile's settings are opened (it does not need to be the profile currently in use), and regardless of whether any changes to settings are made.

Occurs in all modes, as well as both local and online.

Only exception found: Reloading grand prix quicksave data undoes the effects of the bug, restoring the original character selection. Thus, it does not seem to be possible to exploit this bug in order to change characters mid-grand prix.
